In our quest to ditch refined sugar, we are trying to find healthier alternatives, and honey is by far the most popular. There is a lot of controversy around the benefits (or harm) of this product: some consider it to be an absolute evil, and some consider it to be almost the most useful dessert. In fact, both opinions are wrong, and we tell you why.

How much sugar does honey contain?

In short, a lot. Fast carbohydrates make up 80-85% of the total mass of the product, and the sugar in honey is almost identical to the white that we are used to, so there is no need to talk about its harmlessness to the body. Like regular white sugar, honey causes a spike in blood sugar levels, which increases hunger and, in the long term, leads to weight gain and chronic disease. But all these unpleasant consequences threaten only those who use honey uncontrollably. Like sugar, in small quantities (how much sugar you can eat per day without harming your figure, read here) honey will not harm the body and will raise your mood due to the release of serotonin into the blood.

Why is honey healthier than white sugar?

With calories and a high carbohydrate content, everything is clear, but if you really can't live without sweets, honey is still much healthier than sugar. The fact is that white sugar is a completely useless product for the body: it does not contain any vitamins, minerals or proteins - only fast carbohydrates. Honey, with the same carbohydrate content, is rich in many beneficial substances that somewhat counterbalance its sweetness.

Natural honey is a source of antioxidants - phenolic acids and flavonoids. They provide reliable cell protection against free radical damage, improve skin condition and prevent aging processes. The active ingredients in natural honey can have a beneficial effect on heart health by lowering the level of "bad" cholesterol and strengthening the heart muscle. In addition, honey has a powerful antibacterial effect, thanks to which it perfectly strengthens the immune system and ensures the prevention of inflammatory processes.

It should be noted that we are talking about natural honey with 100% organic composition. It is usually sold in specialty stores or apiary owners. Most of the honey that is on the shelves in the supermarket has a very dubious composition with a lot of preservatives and various additives. In addition, honey is the strongest food allergen, so it is better to use it with caution.
