The craze for all plants and the rejection of animal products is a trend that has not given up its positions for the last 5-6 years. Cow's milk is a really controversial product, most researchers are still inclined to believe that an adult should not use it, but in this case, the question arises: what to replace? Previously, the most popular plant-based milk was soy milk, which could be found almost everywhere. It was used to make yoghurts, cottage cheese, cheese - everything that we used to produce from animal milk. However, in the past few years, almond milk has gained immense popularity, displacing soy (and all other types of this plant product) into the background.
What is the secret of success? Firstly, almond milk has a pleasant nutty flavor, in contrast to soy milk, which has a specific aftertaste that not everyone likes. Secondly, all nutritionists in the world, as one, praise almonds for its exceptional beneficial properties: high content of vegetable protein, vitamins A, B and E, iron, zinc, healthy fats and amino acids. Almonds have a beneficial effect on the body, providing a wide range of actions: from improving skin condition to preventing cardiovascular diseases.
However, no matter how much benefit the almonds bring to our body, the harm that the production of this nut on an industrial scale does to the environment is many times greater. The fact is that 80% of all almonds consumed in the world are grown in California, which is now suffering from severe drought. Due to global warming and an increase in the average annual air temperature, most of California's freshwater bodies have either become shallow or completely dry. In order not to lose huge yields of almonds (and on average about 5 liters of water is required to grow one (!) Nut), American farmers had to find an alternative source of water for irrigation. It was groundwater.
So we got to the very essence. Firstly, water is taken from underground wells for watering almond trees many times more than in principle can be restored, which in the future can deprive California of fresh water reserves (needless to say, what is the risk?). Secondly, in the process of drilling wells, the natural landscape is disturbed, which has already led to soil subsidence, and this, in turn, increases the risk of collapse of bridges, large buildings, and can also provoke earthquakes.
But despite all of the above, the amount of almonds produced is growing exponentially, in direct proportion to demand. Not everyone is ready to consume consciously, thinking about the consequences for the planet, and demand, as you know, gives rise to supply. In the current situation of the ecological crisis, it is worth thinking not only about your taste preferences, but also about how the next trip for coffee or a portion of granola with milk will affect the state of our planet.
