It seems to many that a career as a fashion designer is the ultimate dream. The prospect of fame, recognition and wealth pushes millions of young people every year to hit the doorstep of fashion schools in hopes of enrolling in fashion design courses. True, they often forget that there is painstaking work, sleepless nights and enormous stress behind the bows, applause of the admiring audience and interviews with glossy magazines. As a result, many, only reaching incredible career heights, begin to understand that this is not at all what makes them happy. We have collected the stories of 5 famous designers who left their careers in fashion for completely different activities - and are not yet ready to go back.

Martin Margiela

Martin Margiela is the most mysterious and, perhaps, the most iconic designer of the end of the last and the beginning of this century. He not only created the Maison Margiela House, around which there is still a whole cult with an army of loyal adherents, but also largely predetermined the entire visual course of modern fashion: from his submission, we now wear oversized, ugly shoes and things made from recycled materials (Margiela was a pioneer of upcycling long before the word came into our use). Despite the general adoration of both critics and buyers, in 2009 Margiela leaves the brand he created - since then it has existed without its founder. Over the past 11 years, the designer almost did not make himself felt in any way - both his craving for anonymity and fatigue from the crazy rhythm of the fashion industry affected. And recently it became knownthat he decided to try himself in contemporary art - and even very soon he will be marked with a personal exhibition in Paris.

Helmut Lang

Helmut Lang is another iconic designer whose peak of popularity came at the end of the last century. And one more newly minted contemporary artist. In 2005, he left his own brand, which at that time belonged to the Prada Group, and decided to concentrate on projects in the field of contemporary art, architecture and interior design. He arranged several solo exhibitions, and recently even created a collaboration with Saint Laurent. True, to the disappointment of Lang's fans, there was no talk of clothing - the result was an installation for the Saint Laurent boutique in Paris. For these 15 years he did not want to return to fashion - and the brand of his name continues to exist and develop without the participation of the founder.

Christian Lacroix

After declaring the bankruptcy of his own couture house, Christian Lacroix returned to what he once started - to work as a theater artist. Before getting into fashion, Lacroix successfully created costumes for theatrical performances in his native France. Only then he got to work first at Hermès, then at Jean Patou, where he became one of the most popular and recognizable designers of the 80s, and then he created his own personal brand with the financial assistance of the LVMH concern. In 2009, the Christian Lacroix brand was resold - and Lacroix himself left it forever to work in theaters again. During this "vacation" he managed to make three small comebacks - creating capsule collections for Desigual and Schiaparelli, and then - joining Dries Van Noten to work on his collection for spring-summer 2020. However,Lacroix has no plans to fully return to the industry - he claims that he is now much more comfortable behind the scenes of the theater.

Ann Demelemeister

Anne Demelmeister, a member of the legendary Antwerp Six and one of the founders of deconstructivism, left fashion not so long ago - only 7 years ago. Then she handed over the reins of Ann Demeulemeester to the designer Sebastian Meunier - and said that her brainchild can now exist on its own. For a long time, it was a mystery to everyone what she would do after leaving the fashion industry. Most recently, she opened the veil of secrecy and presented two capsule collections of tableware, created in conjunction with the Belgian home goods brand Serax. Very, by the way, on time - household goods now clearly look like a more profitable investment than clothes, because the world is covered by the second wave of lockdowns.

Francisco Costa

For 13 years, Brazilian designer Francisco Costa was very successful head of Calvin Klein - and even became the best designer of womenswear in 2006 and 2008 according to the CFDA. True, the brand's management in 2016 found a replacement in the person of Raf Simons (who had worked there for only 2 years). After that, Costa did not seek a new job in fashion, but decided to go into the field of beauty, creating the Costa Brazil organic cosmetics brand, which combines traditional Brazilian beauty techniques with the principles of sustainable development. According to the designer (and now a beauty entrepreneur), he had the idea of his own cosmetics brand for a long time - and now he has time to bring it to life.
