We continue to talk about vitamins and minerals that are indispensable for the normal functioning of the body. Next in line is beta-carotene. It is a natural antioxidant, which, when it enters the body, turns into vitamin A. First of all, it is necessary to protect cells from damage by free radicals, but in addition it performs a number of vital functions.
Beta-carotene has been shown to improve cognitive function by stimulating the brain, increasing concentration and improving memory. It has a beneficial effect on the health of the skin, not only protecting cells from damage and premature structure, but also nourishing it from the inside, relieving it from flaking and dryness. In addition, beta-carotene has a beneficial effect on eye health, prevents vision loss and protects our “mirror of the soul” from age-related changes. Last but not least, beta carotene is one of the main protectors of your immune system. Its antioxidant properties create a kind of shield that protects cells from damage, viruses and inflammation.
Where to look for beta carotene? The clue will be the bright color of the fruits and vegetables that contain it. Carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, sweet potatoes, bell peppers are a real treasure of this antioxidant. It can also be found in spinach, kale, broccoli, peas, parsley, and cilantro. Although these products do not differ in bright colors, they contain no less nutrients.
There are two important things to keep in mind when talking about beta carotene. First, when it enters the body, it turns into vitamin A, and vitamin A is fat-soluble. This means that without the fatty component, the latter simply cannot be absorbed by the body. Therefore, when deciding to make a salad of carrots, cabbage and other antioxidant-rich vegetables, do not forget to add a couple of tablespoons of vegetable oil, a handful of nuts or seeds. So all useful substances will not be lost. Secondly, due to the fact that vitamin A is fat-soluble, there is a risk of hypervitaminosis, that is, its excess in the body. With water-soluble vitamins (all B groups and vitamin C), for example, this will not happen, because all the excess will leave the body along with the fluid. Therefore, in an attempt to protect the immune system and get the smoothest and most radiant skin, do not forget about the sense of proportion. First of all, food should be balanced, and all foods fit into your daily calorie intake.
