The death of an African American George Floyd - detained by police, one of whom used a choke hold on May 25 - sparked a wave of demonstrations in the United States. Peaceful protests led to an outbreak of looting: in Los Angeles, mobs broke into stores on Rodeo Drive and looted boutiques of Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Ray-Ban, Apple and other well-known brands. Streetwear brands were not lucky either: designer Sean Wotherspoon filmed the smashed corners of Round Two and Vintage by Round Two with broken doors and shattered windows.

Virgil Abloh emotionally echoed this video and reports of the pogroms. Louis Vuitton's menswear creative director and founder of Off-White left a series of social media comments about the marauders: “We're all part of this culture. And is this what you want? The next time you pass Sean Wotherspoon, do it with your eyes downcast and burning with shame."

The Internet community immediately reacted to the words of the designer, outraged that Abloh reduced the meaning of protests against racism to hooligan actions. And she remembered to him that he donated a "mockingly small" amount to help the protesters. Earlier, Abloh personally said that he sent $ 50 to Fempower, which legally protects the rights of protesters. One commentator noted that even the cheapest socks by Abloh cannot be purchased for this amount.

After listening to the criticism, Virgil published an apology essay: “I am sorry if anyone thought that I did not support the movement against police brutality, racial discrimination and inequality. If the robberies help to release tension and benefit everyone, then I can understand them. " In addition, Abloh explained his "modest" donation: it was an amount for one organization, but in total he sent $ 20,500 to the fight against racism.
