Five performances, five rays, five destinies: one of the most ambitious projects of 2016-2017 at the Gogol Center will be the "Star" invented by Kirill Serebrennikov - a pentalogy about amazing poets of the Silver Age. Akhmatova, Kuzmin, Mayakovsky, Mandelstam, Pasternak … the figures of these heroes of Russian literature have been rethought by the leading theater directors and, with the help of the artist Galina Solodovnikova, transferred to a new plane - the stage one. In anticipation of the first premieres scheduled for this year, we suggest reading an excerpt from a new booklet about the past, present and future of the Gogol Center. Both the artistic director and actors - from Victoria Isakova and Philip Avdeev to Svetlana Bragarnik - and the audience tell about the theater, and the essence of the Zvezda project is explained by quotes from the letters of the poets themselves.
Kirill Serebrennikov: "Theater is always a surprise"
"What are we going to surprise with today?" - the question for the theater is far from idle. If you, the audience, show in the theater what you have seen a hundred times, why should you come here? The nature of the theater is like a circus. The theater, like the circus, is about miracles, about danger, about beauty! About courage, about the victory of man over gravity and "common sense
Parsnip. My sister is life
Director: Maxim Didenko
Composer: Ivan Kushnir
“When I was finishing Above the Barriers, a girl I was in love with asked me to give her this book. I felt that this was impossible - I was fond of Cubism at that time, and it was raw, unspoiled, - and then I began to write another book for her on top of this - this is how My Sister - Life was born, she never found out about this substitution ". Boris Pasternak on the history of Mandelstam's book creation. Age-wolfhound Director Anton Adasinsky Starring Chulpan Khamatova “Please, do not consider me a shadow. I still cast a shadow. But lately I have been becoming clear to everyone. This is formidable. For a quarter of a century now, I, mixing the important with the trifles, have infiltrated Russian poetry; but soon my poems will merge with it and dissolve in it, changing something in its structure and composition."
- Boris Pasternak on the history of the book
“Mayakovsky. I love"
Director: Kirill Serebrennikov
“I miss, I miss you - but how - I can't find a place for myself (especially today!) And think only of you. I don't go anywhere, I wander from corner to corner, I look into your empty closet - I kiss your cards and your signatures. I roar often, roar even now … The happiest day in my life will be - your arrival. Love me baby."
- From a letter from Vladimir Mayakovsky to Lilya Brik, October 26, 1921
“Akhmatova. A poem without a hero"
Director: Kirill Serebrennikov
Starring: Alla Demidova
“When I began to decipher the Poem Without a Hero, the more I found doubles in it, which, in turn, bifurcated and so on - ad infinitum (the same happens if you come up with a mirror to the wall of the mirror hall and see endless series of reflections), the clearer I understood that literally I probably didn't need to decipher it. Specific persons are not so important in the Poem, the fragrance of time is important, because the Poem, among other things, included a huge layer of culture of an entire era, which for many today's young people has become a long past history."
- From the book by Alla Demidova "Akhmatovskie Mirrors"
Kuzmin. Trout breaks the ice
Director, composer: Vladislav Nastavshev
“I must be sincere and truthful, at least in front of myself, regarding the confusion that reigns in my soul, but if I have three faces, then more people still sit in me, and everyone cries out, and at times one will shout out the other, and how I will agree them, I myself do not know. My three faces are so dissimilar, so hostile to each other that only the thinnest eye will not be seduced by this difference, which outrages everyone …”.
- From the diary of the poet Mikhail Kuzmin
“Mandelstam. Age-wolfhound"
Director: Anton Adasinsky
Starring Chulpan Khamatova
“Please don't think of me as a shadow. I still cast a shadow. But lately I have been becoming clear to everyone. This is formidable. For a quarter of a century now, I, mixing the important with the trifles, have infiltrated Russian poetry; but soon my poems will merge with it and dissolve in it, changing something in its structure and composition."
